We have been conditioned to believe that we cannot trust our hearts because they are fickle and betray us. Also, that pain comes from our hearts. The deep secret we need to know is that pain is the output of the mind. Our hearts are loyal guardians of our peace and wellbeing. Indeed, although we’ve been taught to think the heart is mischievous and untrustworthy, the truth is that the heart holds the purest intentions for our good, and the wisdom to attain it. Understanding that the heart is not the one betraying us, but that our reliance on the mind is what is betraying us, is critical to re-wiring ourselves.
The Mind
The mind is useful for fact-finding, evaluating facts, and categorizing facts. Based on those facts, the mind was never meant to be the part of us that makes decisions. But its usefulness is apparent as we search through its memory banks for the information we need as we make decisions throughout our lives. In other words, if we surrender our happiness to the mind, it does not have the full capability to KNOW what will make us happy; it can only combine facts in any number of configurations, to come up with scenarios for our hearts to consider. And, in truth, the best choices for our happiness may not yet be anything the mind has experienced or does it have in its memory banks. So, we may need to reach beyond what the mind knows in order to create our joy.
Everything feels rough, rushed, and frantic, and has a sense of seeking or inquiry when we are in our heads. The mind is all about challenging what is … seeking alternatives … but often at the crux of that seeking is doubt, worry, and fear. When you really get to the bottom of it, the thing the mind is really doing, all the time, is reasoning through the facts in its database.
The Mind’s Primary Mission
The mind doesn’t KNOW, so it is seeking for something to land on that it can KNOW. But, because it is designed to keep collecting data, ideas, facts, and hypotheses, this constant search does not allow it to land on anything it can KNOW. This is part of its secret. That it acts as it KNOWS so much, but that it is ever-searching because … it does not know. The mind’s primary mission is to seek out data and answers. This prohibits it from ever being able to offer us what we so deeply desire … the certainty of KNOWING.
Our mind is never satisfied. They are like floodwaters trying to find every possible route available in which to flow. The mind seeks more possibilities and will never be fully satisfied with any of them. Even if there is a good solution present.
The Heart
The heart knows what we most need and what will bring us the most fulfillment and sense of joy. It does not feel any uncertainty about this, nor any need to test the universe for other viable options. It does not take a lot to please the heart. The one simple thing that it knows will fulfill the soul’s deepest desires.
